"How long does car detailing take?" is one of the most common questions we get before a booking — and the answer depends on which service you're booking, your vehicle size, and how long it's been since your last detail.

This guide gives you honest, realistic time estimates for every detailing service we offer across Toronto and the GTA, so you can plan your day around the appointment properly.

Quick Answer — Car Detailing Time by Service

ServiceSedan TimeSUV / Minivan
Standard Interior2–2.5 hrs2.5–3.5 hrs
Premium Interior (Steam + Shampoo)3–4 hrs4–5.5 hrs
Standard Exterior1–1.5 hrs1.5–2 hrs
Wash & Wax (Clay + Sealant)2–3 hrs2.5–3.5 hrs

Note: These are working times. For interior services with shampoo, add 1–2 hours of drying time before the vehicle is ready to use. Ceramic coating requires 24–48 hours indoor curing after application.

How Long Does Interior Car Detailing Take?

Standard Interior — 2 to 2.5 Hours

A standard interior detail on a sedan covers full vacuum of seats, carpets, floor mats, and trunk; dashboard and console wipe-down; interior window cleaning; and door panel cleaning. On a clean, regularly maintained sedan this takes approximately 2 hours. On a sedan that hasn't been cleaned in several months — salt residue, crumbs, dust — budget 2.5 hours.

Premium Interior (Steam + Shampoo) — 3 to 4 Hours

The premium interior adds hot steam cleaning throughout the cabin, hot-water extraction shampoo for seats and carpets, and targeted stain and odour treatment. The shampoo extraction step adds significant time — seats need to be worked panel by panel, and carpets need time under the extraction machine. On a sedan, budget 3–4 hours. Heavily soiled vehicles with significant pet hair, salt buildup, or old stains run toward the high end.

Drying time: After a premium interior with shampoo, carpets and seats need 1–2 hours to dry before you use the vehicle. We recommend not putting floor mats back in until they're fully dry — usually same day but after a few hours.

How Long Does Exterior Car Detailing Take?

Standard Exterior (Hand Wash) — 1 to 1.5 Hours

A standard exterior hand wash — including wheels, tires, glass, and panels — takes 1 to 1.5 hours on a sedan. This is a thorough hand wash, not a rinse.

Wash & Wax (Clay Bar + Sealant) — 2 to 3 Hours

The wash and wax adds clay bar decontamination and sealant application after the wash. Clay bar decontamination is a panel-by-panel process that removes bonded contaminants — road salt, brake dust, industrial fallout — that washing alone can't remove. Sealant application adds another 30–45 minutes of work plus flash time. Total: 2–3 hours on a sedan.

How Long Does a Full Car Detail Take?

A full interior and exterior detail — standard or premium interior combined with a wash and wax — takes 4 to 6 hours for a sedan. This is the most common booking for spring and fall seasonal details.

This is also why you don't need to be present for the whole appointment. Most clients hand over their keys in the morning and return to a clean vehicle in the afternoon.

How Long Does Ceramic Coating Take?

Ceramic coating application on a properly prepared sedan takes 1.5–2.5 hours of active work. However, the full process takes longer when you factor in:

  • Pre-coating prep: The vehicle needs a decontamination wash and clay bar before coating — add 1.5–2 hours
  • Paint correction (if needed): If your paint has swirl marks or scratches, correction adds 4–8 hours before coating goes on
  • Curing time: After application, the vehicle should remain indoors for 24–48 hours and avoid washing for 7 days

For a ceramic coating with full prep but no paint correction — budget a full day (6–8 hours of work). With paint correction included, it's typically a 2-day process.

How Long Does Paint Correction Take?

Paint correction is the most time-intensive detailing service. Using a dual-action or rotary polisher, a detailer works panel by panel to remove swirl marks, scratches, water spots, and oxidation from your paint.

  • Single-stage correction (light swirls, moderate defects): 4–5 hours on a sedan
  • Two-stage correction (heavy scratches, significant oxidation): 6–10 hours
  • Full multi-stage correction (show-quality finish): Full day or more

How Long Does Car Detailing Take for an SUV or Minivan?

SUVs, minivans, and trucks have more surface area, more seats, larger cargo areas, and higher door panels. Add 30–60 minutes to any sedan time estimate for crossovers and small SUVs, and 60–90 minutes for full-size SUVs, minivans, and trucks.

ServiceFull-Size SUV / Minivan
Standard Interior3–4 hrs
Premium Interior4.5–6 hrs
Full Detail (Int + Ext)6–8 hrs

What Makes a Car Detail Take Longer?

  • Heavy pet hair — adds 30–60 minutes. Embedded pet hair in fabric requires specialized tools and significantly more vacuum work.
  • Severe stains or odours — persistent stains and odour sources need multiple treatment passes. Add 30–60 minutes.
  • Long time since last detail — a car that hasn't been detailed in 1–2 years has more embedded contamination. Budget 30–60 minutes extra.
  • Heavy salt buildup — post-winter details with significant calcium chloride residue in carpets take longer to extract properly.
  • Vehicle size — as above, SUVs and minivans add significant time across every service.
